Purpose

Glean works with nature to promote a more sustainable way of life. By rethinking how we live, we can eliminate food waste and create natural, healthy soil for the next generation of food.

To strengthen our community. We’re all dependent on one another. We embrace this dependence, and seek to build a local community that cares about the collective well-being of community members. Furthermore, we recognize that our prosperity is directly linked to our community.  By improving our community, we improve our own lives. Everyone wins.

To re-think how we live. We see the need to re-think the way we live. With creativity and innovation, we can bring about positive change for society and the environment.

To eliminate trash. We reject of the concept of trash as something that can be buried and forgotten. One person’s waste is another’s food.

To reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Unlike landfilling, composting doesn’t release methane – a harmful greenhouse gas.

To grow the composting industry. At present, composters can’t compete with landfills because it’s cheaper in the short term to bury and forget trash than to process waste. But forgetting it only leaves it for future generations to deal with – so the problem of managing the waste perpetuates.

We seek to move the composting industry toward a smaller, more sustainable model that can accomodate growth and make participation more practical and attractive.  By changing the terms, food diversion can be economically viable – and by staying small, nimble, and dynamic, we can adapt to change quickly and effectively.
